Description
Unit Vector Hat
The unit vector hat has the symbols for the three main unit vectors, î (i-hat) ĵ (j-hat), and k̂, (k-hat). You could say that this is your i-hat, j-hat, and k-hat hat! Physics chic doesn’t get more geek!
The unit vectors are vectors with a length of one that point in a particular direction. î , ĵ, and k̂ form a set of three mutually perpendicular vectors. They are similar to x, y, and z, but a bit more generic. Most advanced physics courses use i, j, and k rather than x, y, and z.
A vector that has a length other than 1 that is pointing in the direction of one of the unit vectors can be expressed by simply multiplying the length times the unit vector. For example, a vector that is 5 m long pointing in the i direction would be 5 î.
To see how you can add a vector in the î direction to one in the ĵ direction, see this helpful info.
