Uranus is the seventh planet out from the sun. It is an ice giant since it contains water, methane, and other ices in its atmosphere. It is the third largest planet in size, but fourth largest in mass. Its axis is tilted almost 90 degrees from the other planets and the plane of the ecliptic.
The symbol for Uranus is a combination of the symbols for the Sun and Mars. Uranus was named after the Greek deity of the sky, rather than the Roman counterpart Caelus. It can barely be seen with the naked eye, but was recognized as a planet by William Herschel in 1781, although he initially thought it was a comet.
