Description
x y z Unit Vector Hat
The x y z unit vector hat has the symbols for the three main unit vectors, x̂ (x-hat) ŷ (y-hat), and ẑ, (z-hat). You could say that this is your x-hat, y-hat, and j-hat hat! Physics chic doesn’t get more geek!
The unit vectors are vectors with a length of one that point in a particular direction. x̂, ŷ, and ẑ form a set of three mutually perpendicular vectors. Many advanced physics courses use î , ĵ, and k̂ rather than x̂, ŷ, and ẑ to be a bit more generic.
A vector that has a length other than 1 that is pointing in the direction of one of the unit vectors can be expressed by simply multiplying the length times the unit vector. For example, a vector that is 5 m long pointing in the x direction would be 5 x̂.
To see how you can add a vector in the x̂ direction to one in the ŷ direction, see this helpful info.
